Owasso PS and U.S. Department of Education reach agreement
SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Education has reached an agreement with Owasso Public Schools following an investigation into the district after high school student Nex Benedict’s suicide. The investigation revealed a pattern of inadequate responses to harassment, raising concerns over students’ civil rights. The district has agreed to implement changes, including Title IX training and improved reporting protocols for harassment incidents. Advocates, like Lance Preston from the Rainbow Youth Project, hope this agreement will prompt schools in Oklahoma to prioritize creating safe learning environments for all students. The district expressed commitment to fulfilling the new requirements seriously.
