Organizations taking abandoned ships from derelict to underwater habitats
SUMMARY: A new initiative aims to remove abandoned vessels from South Mississippi waters. Led by the Gulf of Mexico Alliance and supported by the infrastructure bipartisan bill, over $7 million will be allocated over the next four years for this purpose. Marine Patrol Sergeant Roy Libum highlights the challenges, noting 154 vessels were reported in the past two years, with 116 removed. The derelict boats pose environmental and navigation hazards due to contaminants like diesel and oil. The Department of Marine Resources partners with Gulfstream Marine to clean and repurpose these boats, turning them into artificial reefs that support aquatic ecosystems.
