Opinion: It’s time to take Chronic Wasting Disease seriously
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s natural resources are critical for the wellbeing of future generations and support the state‘s economy through activities such as hunting and fishing. The actions of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Commission, however, seem to lack transparency and public engagement. Decisions made by its five-member board directly impact wildlife management and conservation policies. A notable concern is the handling of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer, highlighted by contentious decisions regarding the CWD zone in Claiborne County. For effective management of such issues, the Commission needs to act with more scientific integrity and accountability. Public awareness and involvement in these matters are vital.

Mississippi State drops first SEC game of the season, falling to Florida 45-28
SUMMARY: The Mississippi State football team lost 45-28 to Florida in their first conference game, despite improving their offensive execution with 480 yards and four scores. The Bulldogs struggled defensively, allowing 503 yards from Florida’s dual-quarterback attack, which included Graham Mertz’s efficient 201 yards passing. While Mississippi State’s rushing game showed promise with 236 yards, their defense faltered, failing to generate sacks and allowing too many explosive plays. Head coach Jeff Lebby expressed frustration over the defensive performance. With this loss, the Bulldogs face a three-game losing streak and will play No. 1 Texas next week.

Utility workers to aid in AMBER Alert response through new Mississippi initiative
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Public Service Commission is partnering with law enforcement and utility organizations to enhance the state‘s AMBER Alert program. Utility workers, who often work outdoors in residential areas, will receive training to identify signs of child abduction and recognize relevant individuals and vehicles. This initiative aims to strengthen safety measures for children and communities, with statistics showing a decline in child abduction cases since the AMBER Alert System’s inception. The commission will conduct statewide training sessions and launch a social media campaign to inform the public about the program’s goals and safety education efforts.
