Operation Iron Ruck Raises Awareness For Veteran Suicide | November 25, 2024 | News 19 at 6:30 p.m.
SUMMARY: Governor Kay Ivey has declared Wednesday as Operation Iron Rock Day in Alabama to raise awareness for veteran suicide prevention. Since 2018, this event has involved student veterans from the University of Alabama and Auburn University marching 151 miles to honor veterans lost to suicide. Participants will carry 22 pounds of donated materials, symbolizing the 22 veterans who die by suicide daily. The initiative promotes camaraderie among veterans and highlights their shared struggles. Operation Iron Rock fosters a sense of community, encouraging support and understanding. Participants will also enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner during the journey.

Severe Storms Possible Saturday Evening through Early Sunday: Friday Evening Forecast 12/27/2024
SUMMARY: A soggy afternoon with strong storms has brought the possibility of tornadoes and gusty winds, with three tornado warnings issued across the area. The storms, particularly west of I-65, are expected to weaken later tonight, though strong storms remain in parts of Green, Washington, and Clark Counties. Final Salute to WKRG’s 2024 Smiles Behind the Shield award recipients
SUMMARY: WKRG has honored First Responders across the Gulf Coast for their exceptional service in 2024. Highlights include Mobile Police dispatcher Olivia Bradley, who was surprised with recognition at work, and Amy McDonald, an EMS operations supervisor, who was overwhelmed by her team’s support. Officer John Trer, recognized for his dedication, was surprised by his brother Jaylen Bindall. Chief Brad Kendrick praised Chief Moore for improvements in fire ratings. The Streeter family shared pride in their loved one’s legacy, and Zach received the Smiles Behind the Shield Award for his leadership. Officer Safer was also honored for his commitment as a mounted officer.
WKRG’s Smiles Behind the Shield award has come to an end for 2024. Over the course of the year, our team has awarded first responders who have gone above and beyond the call of duty across the Gulf Coast.
