Only a third of hospitals qualify for Mississippi’s lifeline grant program

SUMMARY: A legislative budget meeting has revealed that only a third of hospitals will receive money through Mississippi’s “hospital lifeline program.” The program, which aimed to aid in the state’s ongoing hospital crisis, was funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds instead of the state’s general fund. This meant that most hospitals that had already received COVID-19 relief funds would not be eligible. During the meeting, it was confirmed that around 38 of the 75 hospitals that applied for the money would receive any of it due to COVID-19 stipulations. The blame was passed between lawmakers and health officials regarding the issue of where the funds came from. Possible options were presented, including activating the program for the eligible hospitals now or altering the current statute for all eligible hospitals to receive a portion of the money. The decision was left to the lawmakers.

Victims will have easier access to case information, with a seven-day response deadline for law enforcement inquiries. Additionally, agencies must notify victims before disposing of evidence. Hospitals must provide forensic exams and cannot refuse victims seeking rape kits. If signed, the law will take effect on July 1, addressing previous concerns about denied exams.

SUMMARY: Colorado State University researchers predict an above-average 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, with 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). The season runs June 1 to November 30. There’s a 33% chance of a major hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas, higher than the 27% historical average. While Atlantic waters are cooler than last year, which may temper storm strength, residents in coastal areas like Mississippi are urged to prepare early. In 2024, the Atlantic saw 18 named storms; Mississippi experienced one hurricane, Francine, which weakened after hitting Louisiana.
