Online voting in Alaska’s Fat Bear Week contest starts after an attack killed 1 contestant
SUMMARY: Fat Bear Week has commenced at Alaska’s Katmai National Park, inviting viewers to vote for their favorite among 12 hefty brown bears, now in its 10th year. The contest highlights the survival of approximately 2,200 brown bears that gorge on salmon before winter hibernation. The introduction of contestants was delayed due to the death of Bear 402, killed in a fight. This year’s bracket features matchups where voting considers bears’ overall success in fattening up rather than size alone. Voting will continue until October 8, with millions expected to participate.

Dockworkers join other unions in trying to fend off automation, or minimize the impact
SUMMARY: A significant port workers’ strike has shut down major dockyards on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast, highlighting fears of job replacement by automation. The International Longshoremen’s Association, representing about 45,000 workers, demands pay raises and a ban on automation of port machinery. This anxiety over automation isn’t new; similar issues arose in the 1960s and the coal industry, where job security decreased amidst mechanization. While automation can enhance efficiency, it threatens numerous jobs. Unions are seeking provisions to protect workers in the face of advancing technology, as seen with recent strikes in various industries concerning AI-related job security.

Mississippi justices reject latest appeal from man on death row since 1976
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court unanimously denied an appeal from Richard Gerald Jordan, the state‘s longest-serving death row inmate, who was sentenced in 1976 for kidnapping and murdering Edwina Marter. Jordan’s attorney argued that he was denied due process because a court-appointed psychiatric examiner, rather than an independent one for his defense, evaluated him. The court ruled this issue had been previously addressed, and a federal judge found no violation of Jordan’s rights. While Jordan’s legal team is exploring further options, including requesting a rehearing, the ruling may allow the state to set a new execution date.
