Ongoing heat may reduce air quality in East Tennessee

Published

on

www.youtube.com – WBIR Channel 10 – 2024-08-26 21:24:00

SUMMARY: This afternoon’s view from Sharps Ridge shows haze over Knoxville, attributed to a chemical reaction between car exhaust, sunlight, and high temperatures, creating ground-level ozone. As of 5 p.m., air quality is on the brink of shifting from yellow (moderate) to orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups). Ground-level ozone levels are expected to remain high for several days, with recommendations for vulnerable individuals—such as those with asthma or COPD—to stay indoors. Suggestions to improve air quality include carpooling, walking, biking, and conserving energy. Updates on air quality will be provided by Fox 43.

Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to be Weather Alert Impact Days because of the ongoing heat.
