FEMA resumes operations after recent threats
SUMMARY: FEMA has resumed door-to-door services for Hurricane Helene victims in Western North Carolina after a temporary halt on October 13 due to safety concerns. The Ashe County Sheriff noted that some operations were paused because of threats in the region. These concerns arose from a credible threat made by William Jacob Parsons, a 44-year-old man who was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor related to threats against FEMA personnel. Following his release on bond, FEMA has returned to its on-the-ground assistance efforts for those affected by the hurricane.

Dirt Cheap stores to close after parent company files for bankruptcy
SUMMARY: Dirt Cheap, an “extreme value” retail chain with over 60 locations in the Southeast, has filed for bankruptcy in Delaware, prompting store closures and sales by year-end. The parent company, which also owns affiliated outlets, cited financial struggles linked to competition with Target, which began offering better returns to a rival store, leaving Dirt Cheap with lower-quality inventory. The chain, founded in Hattiesburg over 30 years ago, primarily resells overstock and off-season merchandise. Dirt Cheap’s bankruptcy follows similar filings from retailers like Big Lots and True Value this year.
