Ole Miss professor, student looking at Mississippi juvenile arrest policies
SUMMARY: Researchers at Ole Miss are examining Mississippi’s juvenile arrest policies, following their study of similar practices in Florida. Assistant professor Abigail Novak and doctoral student Victoria de Francisco Lopez published a book on juvenile arrests in Florida, which emphasized the need for clear guidance for officers when dealing with children. They also called for appropriate training on child development and strategies for addressing delinquent behavior. Their research found that law enforcement agencies in Florida provided little policy guidance for interactions with children, a condition that is likely to be similar in Mississippi and other states. The researchers plan to conduct similar work on a national level.

Marion County VFDs using thermal-imaging technology at fire, emergency scenes
SUMMARY: Maran County has introduced new thermal imaging cameras to enhance firefighting efforts. These devices, resembling smartphones, utilize infrared technology to detect temperature variations, helping firefighters locate people and objects in low visibility situations. Each fire engine will be equipped with one of these cameras, which aids in identifying hot spots, preventing disorientation, and improving overall safety during operations. Training was recently conducted for 21 firefighters, who successfully used the cameras to extinguish a fire from a dryer lint build-up. The cameras cost around $500 to $600 each, funded by community donations, as the volunteer departments require affordable equipment.
