Ole Miss, Mississippi State men’s basketball predicted to finish middle of SEC
SUMMARY: Ahead of SEC Media Days, reporters have predicted Alabama as the favorite to win the SEC men‘s basketball title after their historic Final Four run last year. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are expected to finish at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively, highlighting the conference’s depth. The AP preseason poll ranks Ole Miss at No. 24 nationally, while Mississippi State received six votes. Alabama’s Mark Sears is favored for SEC Player of the Year, joined on the first team by notable players from other teams. Ole Miss’ Matthew Murrell and MSU’s Josh Hubbard made the second team. The season starts on November 4.

SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves announced that Mississippi is sending additional resources to North Carolina following Hurricane Helene, which caused significant damage and flooding. This week, 22 Mississippi Highway Patrol officers and 25 from the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will assist with search and rescue and traffic control efforts. Helene caused over 250 deaths, with a significant number in North Carolina, and many people remain missing. Mississippi has previously deployed National Guard members, rescue and engineering teams, helicopters, and generators to assist various states affected by the hurricanes, alongside local utility efforts and community fundraisers for relief.

Ole Miss ranked in AP preseason men’s basketball poll, Mississippi State receives votes
SUMMARY: Ole Miss basketball has been ranked 24th in the AP preseason poll, marking its first top 25 ranking since the 1997-98 season. This recognition comes as expectations rise for the team under head coach Chris Beard, who is entering his second year. The Rebels return five key players from last season, along with notable transfers, including Virginia Tech’s Sean Pedulla. Meanwhile, Mississippi State received six votes in the top 25 but did not make the list. Both teams will preview the upcoming season at SEC Media Days in Birmingham, Alabama. Southern Miss did not receive any votes.
