MDOT commissioner echoes need for recurring revenue to improve roadways
SUMMARY: In 2023, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) received a historic one-time allocation of $2 billion. However, officials, including Northern District Transportation Commissioner John Caldwell, are advocating for a recurring revenue source to maintain essential roadways and bridges. Caldwell emphasized the need for at least $400 million annually to sustain infrastructure, noting that current fuel tax revenues are decreasing due to a rise in electric vehicles and improved fuel efficiency. Potential funding solutions include an internet sales tax on electric delivery services. There are ongoing efforts in the state legislature to address these funding challenges.
