State Question 834 would change one word in the Oklahoma Constitution. Here's why
SUMMARY: Oklahoma legislators have placed State Question 834 on the ballot, aiming to specify that only American citizens can vote in state elections. Critics argue this change is unnecessary, as existing law already prohibits non-citizen voting, making it a felony to register. Despite political divisions, some lawmakers believe the amendment addresses a perceived problem with non-citizen voting, attributing it to current federal immigration policies. Representative Andy Fugate sees it as a political move to mobilize certain voters, while Senator Shane Jett views it as a necessary solution. Voters will encounter this question alongside another on their November ballot.
