OK state board of education struggles with legal representation
SUMMARY: The State Board of Education recently dismissed its general counsel and hired an attorney from the Attorney General‘s office at a lower rate of $85 an hour, compared to the previous attorney’s $300. Attorney General Drummond criticized the board for disregarding legal advice. The meeting, which began under the new attorney, was marked by surprise and confusion regarding the legal switch. Some board members believe the AG‘s attorney should remain. The board must now decide whether to retain this attorney, hire external counsel at a higher cost, or consider in-house legal representation. Many agenda items were postponed due to these changes.

Oklahoma tribal leader says President Joe Bidenโs apology is a step in the right direction
SUMMARY: Indian boarding schools’ history is significant in Oklahoma, with nearly 100 identified across the state. Recently, President Biden delivered a historic apology for the federal government‘s role in these schools during an event attended by tribal leaders, including Shawnee Chief Ben Barnes. While some view this apology as a potential political move ahead of the upcoming election, Chief Barnes believes it symbolizes progress in acknowledging the experiences of Native Americans. He noted that not all boarding school experiences were negative, but the federal government’s initiative to listen to Native stories is a crucial step toward healing.
