Despite three weeks passing since the hurricane, experts emphasize the importance of being cautious as scammers attempt to steal money and personal information. Residents should be wary of unlicensed contractors, fake FEMA representatives, and fraudulent charity solicitations. Verify any documentation and never pay upfront for services. Be cautious of online scams, including phishing links designed to steal personal data. As the holiday season approaches, research charities thoroughly before donating. Science of the Surge: USF team studies wave heights and reopening of Midnight Pass
SUMMARY: Storm surge poses significant challenges to coastal communities, especially highlighted by Hurricane Milton’s damage, which opened the Midnight Pass after over a century. Scientists at the University of South Florida (USF) are studying the impact of such storms, focusing on barrier islands as vital defenses. Research aims to enhance understanding and resilience against natural forces rather than fighting them. Teams are measuring sea level changes, examining debris, and documenting wildlife in the newly formed pass, which has revitalized local ecosystems. The findings will guide better urban planning to coexist with nature and mitigate future storm risks.
Hurricanes Helene and Milton were both record-breaking storms โ hundred-year events that happened a few weeks apart.
