SUMMARY: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is actively dredging the Mississippi to maintain safe travel pathways as the waterway hits historically low levels for the second year in a row. Using dustpan dredges, which use jets to loosen mud and vacuum it away, the corps strives to maintain a 12- navigation channel. These dredges can clear a 30-foot-wide section of river in an hour, sometimes operating continuously for 24-hour periods.
