Officials: Louisiana's best students are leaving for out-of-state schools

SUMMARY: Louisiana‘s top high school graduates are increasingly leaving the state for out-of-state universities, driven by better financial aid offers and recruiting. Only 78.8% of eligible “Honors” students accept the state-funded TOPS scholarship compared to higher acceptance rates among other tiers. A decline in overall TOPS participation and funding, along with a shrinking pool of eligible graduates, exacerbates this issue. Louisiana’s universities face budget cuts due to anticipated deficits, threatening educational attainment efforts. With over half of job postings requiring an associate’s degree, there’s an urgent need to upskill students to stay competitive and retain talent in Louisiana.
