Officials confirm bird flu in chickens from Copiah County commercial breeder
SUMMARY: A second case of bird flu, H5N1 avian influenza, has been confirmed in a Mississippi chicken flock at a commercial breeder’s facility in Copiah County. This follows a similar outbreak in Greene County. The Mississippi Board of Animal Health (MBAH) quarantined the affected facility and depopulated the birds to prevent the disease’s spread. No affected birds entered the food system. While bird flu poses no food safety risk to humans, poultry and eggs should be properly handled and cooked. The MBAH is enhancing monitoring and biosecurity measures in collaboration with federal officials and the poultry industry.
