Odds increase to 80% for Caribbean system to develop: NHC

SUMMARY: Brooks reports that a tropical system is developing in the Caribbean, with an 80% chance of becoming a tropical storm within two days. Currently, Florida experiences low rain chances, with some showers near the Atlantic. As for temperatures, they are expected to reach 89-90°F. The system may create significant impacts by Thursday, with hurricane-force winds predicted to affect areas like Dixie and Levy counties and tropical storm winds reaching Orlando. Residents are warned to prepare for potential severe weather and to ensure hurricane kits are ready, as some models indicate a looming storm could have significant effects on the region.

The odds of a tropical system developing over the next 48 hours in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and southeastern Gulf of Mexico have increased to a high – 80% – chance, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy arrives in South Africa for state visit following Trump’s renewed criticism

SUMMARY: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in South Africa for a state visit amid accusations from U.S. President Donald Trump that Zelenskyy is prolonging the war by rejecting a peace deal involving Ukrainian territory. While Zelenskyy traveled, a Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed nine people and injured 63. Peace talks have stalled, with limited progress made during discussions in London. Zelenskyy will meet with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has sought to mediate the conflict, although his efforts have had little success. Zelenskyy questioned Russia’s commitment to peace after a failed ceasefire attempt.

Lakeland Park may be renamed after civil rights activist

SUMMARY: Lakeland Park may soon be renamed Meline Brooks Park in honor of the influential civil rights activist and NAACP member, Meline Brooks. She played a vital role in ending segregation in the 1960s, organized sit-ins, and fought for voter registration, often involving her children in her activism. Brooks was the first Black matron hired by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and successfully sued for racial and sexual discrimination. Her daughter and other community members have campaigned for this name change over nine years, and a resolution will be voted on at the next city commission meeting as a tribute to Brooks’ legacy.

Community members and family advocate for renaming a local park in honor of Madalynne Brooks, a key figure in the civil rights movement in Polk County.
