Mississippi Senate advances its tax overhaul
SUMMARY: The Senate Finance Committee has advanced legislation to reduce Mississippi’s income tax and grocery sales tax while increasing the gasoline tax. Republican senators argue these changes will stimulate the economy, proposing to decrease the flat 4% income tax to 2.99% over four years. Democrats, however, claim this disproportionately benefits corporations and harms low-income individuals. The Senate’s plan represents a $326 million net tax cut, less than the House’s $1.1 billion proposal, which seeks complete income tax elimination. The Senate also aims to lower the grocery tax from 7% to 5% by July 2026 and raise the gasoline tax to address highway maintenance funding.

Tax season has begun. Here’s when you’ll get your refund

Refunds can be claimed if you paid excess taxes or qualify for credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit. New this year, the IRS expanded its Direct File program, allowing some taxpayers to file directly with the IRS without commercial software, now available in 25 states.
