New TAT Policy
SUMMARY: A settlement has been reached in a class-action lawsuit against the Jackson Police Department’s roadblock program. The lawsuit accused the city of primarily setting up roadblocks in black and low-income neighborhoods, violating people’s Fourth Amendment rights of unreasonable search and seizure. The settlement requires the police department to provide a handout about their ticket and towing operations during safety checkpoints and file a summary report that includes the reason for the roadblock, its location and time, and the number of citations, arrests, and searches made. The settlement allows monitoring of the police department for the next four years.
