New scam uses missing children posts to steal money
SUMMARY: Scammers are exploiting missing children posts on social media to steal money. These fake posts often lack crucial details like location and police information and are initially found in community or yard sale groups. They usually have limited creator information and comments are disabled. After gaining traction, scammers replace the post with ads, potentially leading to harmful links. Colleen Nick from the Morgan Nick Foundation warns that while it’s important to act quickly when a child is missing, it’s also essential to verify the post’s legitimacy before sharing. Report suspicious posts to social media platforms or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Scammers are using posts of missing children to take advantage of people and steal their money. Although the posts look genuine, here’s what to look for.
