New program trains officers de-escalation tools for mental health

SUMMARY: Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training in Jackson, Mississippi is crucial for law enforcement officers to learn how to de-escalate situations involving individuals experiencing mental health issues. The 40-hour intensive training program equips officers with the tools they need to recognize signs of mental illness and respond appropriately. The goal is to limit the interaction between law enforcement and the mentally ill, while also involving the input of individuals who need help. The program has seen a dramatic decrease in fatalities involving law enforcement and individuals in mental health crises. Hinds Behavioral Health Services, the Jackson Police Department, and the Mississippi Department of Mental Health are partners in the CIT training.
