New Orleans Weather 5pm: Chilly start to Thursday, warmer Friday
SUMMARY: The weather is chilly with temperatures dropping, currently at 54°F, and winds have calmed. The cold front has brought clear skies and low humidity, leading to a chilly night with lows in the 30s to 40s. A light freeze and frost are expected, especially on the North Shore. Tomorrow’s high will be in the mid-50s. The cold air will start to retreat by Friday, with temperatures rising into the 60s and 70s for the weekend. Another cold front is expected by midweek, but no significant temperature drop is expected until Thursday.
Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin says expect a light freeze on the Northshore tonight, colder Thursday morning and warmer start to the weekend.

Sewer upgrades could unlock housing near UL, Downtown
SUMMARY: Lafayette’s sewer capacity has long hindered residential development, but planned upgrades by LUS, including a new pump station, could accommodate 2,000 more units. This will open space for apartment buildings and other high-demand projects in the urban core, including areas like UL Lafayette, Johnston Street, and the Oil Center. Developers will pay capital recovery fees to reserve sewage capacity. The station is a step toward addressing infrastructure shortfalls, which have slowed downtown growth. UL, with dorm overcrowding, is a major stakeholder. While improvements continue, the aging system faces challenges, including private property issues and capacity limitations.

State lawmakers, trucking association say federal probe could lead to lower auto insurance
SUMMARY: Louisiana has the third-highest auto insurance rates in the U.S., partly due to staged wrecks, fake injuries, and frivolous claims. Recently, federal authorities indicted two lawyers and a businessman for their involvement in a scheme to stage accidents in New Orleans. Truck drivers, like Donald from Texas, are supportive of the crackdown, with many using dash cameras to protect themselves. Over 50 people have been charged since 2020 for filing false claims. Lawmakers hope this investigation will help reduce litigation and lower insurance rates in Louisiana. The indicted individuals are scheduled for initial appearances soon.

St. John President Jaclyn Hotard accused of perjury in lawsuit linked to failed grain terminal • Louisiana Illuminator
SUMMARY: In a recent court filing, lawyers for St. John the Baptist Parish environmental advocate Joy Banner accused Parish President Jaclyn Hotard of lying in court about communications with her mother-in-law, Darla Gaudet, regarding a controversial grain terminal project. Despite Hotard’s claims of having no knowledge of Gaudet’s property, text messages reveal their extensive discussions on the project and property rezoning. Hotard allegedly used violent language against Banner, causing concern for her safety. Banner’s attorneys are seeking sanctions against Hotard for perjury and are pushing for further legal action related to their ongoing lawsuit over First Amendment violations during a council meeting.
