New Orleans City Council launches investigation into Bourbon Street safety barriers | Louisiana
SUMMARY: The New Orleans City Council is investigating the procurement and implementation of street barrier systems on Bourbon Street, focusing on the Heald HT2 Matador and RCS8040 S10 bollard systems. The inquiry will include engineering reports, safety evaluations, and maintenance records to assess public safety impacts and procurement decisions. To maintain confidentiality and security, documents will remain undisclosed until the investigation concludes. The council’s findings are especially pertinent after a recent terrorist attack. Public reactions to the investigation were mixed, with concerns about secrecy and broader safety issues. The final report will be released along with related documents.

New Orleans City Council launches investigation into French Quarter security • Louisiana Illuminator
SUMMARY: The New Orleans City Council has initiated an investigation into the city’s street barrier systems following a New Year’s Day terrorist attack on Bourbon Street, where inadequate barriers allowed a suspect to harm many pedestrians. The investigation will assess the design, procurement, and maintenance of these barriers, and identify accountable parties. The council aims to improve future security rather than assign blame. The new barriers currently being installed are reportedly less effective than the previous ones. Council members emphasized the investigation’s goal is to enhance safety rather than scapegoating, with no defined timeline for its completion.
