New mural to brighten up Houston bridge
SUMMARY: A new mural will soon brighten a part of Chickasaw County, specifically on the North and South Old Bridge Crossing west of Madison Street. The Chickasaw County Historical Society, with a grant from the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance, began the artist search in May. Positioned next to the Tanglefoot Trail, the mural aims to attract tourists who bike, hike, and walk the trail, benefitting local hotels and bed and breakfasts. The project will beautify Houston, enhancing its appeal for visitors. The mural is expected to be completed by the end of July, according to Davis.

Middleton Attendance Center historic marker
SUMMARY: On Friday, Lindsay Hall reported the unveiling of a historical marker at Northeast Middle School to commemorate Middleton Attendance Center. Built in 1959, Middleton accommodated black students in Lauderdale County outside the Meridian Separate School District, housing 59 faculty members and around 2,000 students from grades 1-12. It remained operational until 1970, when desegregation led black students to be reassigned to predominantly white schools. The event holds significance for alumni, affirming their school's historical presence. Middleton was later converted into Northeast Lauderdale Elementary School. This marker is a significant addition, celebrating the school's crucial role in local history.
