Having enlisted in the Marines as a teenager, Brown fought in the Battle of Okinawa and was injured. During the celebration, it was announced that the U.S. military would replace his lost medals and awards due to a house fire decades prior. As the last living WWII veteran of the Andrew Lawhon Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Brown emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of previous generations and continuing to serve as engaged citizens.
