New military supercomputer named after Mississippi Medal of Honor recipient

Named “Carpenter,” the machine can perform nine quadrillion calculations per second, aiding the Department of Defense with computational challenges. The system boasts 277,248 AMD compute cores and 563 terabytes of memory. A native of Mississippi, Carpenter saved a fellow Marine in Afghanistan by shielding him from a grenade blast. ERDC has a history of naming high-performance computers after state heroes, and Carpenter’s image adorns this supercomputer.
