New little library installed south of Loop 410 continues combating lack of book access
SUMMARY: Senior Day Care services and after-school programs will launch in 6-12 months to address literacy issues and access to books in rural areas lacking public libraries. In particular, the area south of Highway 410 has limited resources and has seen school districts report zero circulation of children’s library materials. Local publisher April Monterrosa emphasizes the importance of “little libraries” that provide access to books for the community. Recent donations, such as one from Long Star National Bank, have helped establish new libraries. Efforts to stock these libraries with books are ongoing, with hopes for community sponsorship.
The little libraries scattered around San Antonio and beyond are small sets of bookshelves that look like little mailboxes, but they have a big impact.
