New Laws for Mississippians on the Horizon
SUMMARY: New Mississippi legislation, effective July 1st, includes House Bill 349, banning trucks and SUVs with lifted front fenders higher than four inches above the back, addressing safety concerns. Despite introducing 2100 bills, only 225 became law. Controversial HB1409, a criminal justice reform bill benefiting over 40,000 voters, died in the Senate, but House Bill 64 allows incarcerated individuals to vote unless convicted of disenfranchising crimes. Public schools will receive $250 million from the new Mississippi Student Funding Formula. Walker's Law criminalizes sextortion with up to 15 years in prison. House Bill 1323 removes the statute of limitations on sexual abuse crimes against the elderly and vulnerable.

Disabled Marine veteran spending one week on a tower to raise money for wounded heroes – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: Scott Burns, a double amputee Marine veteran, is spending seven days atop a 14-foot tower at the Mall at Barnes Crossing, raising funds for his nonprofit “7 Days for the Troops.” This year's donations will assist two local disabled veterans in Northeast Mississippi—one with home modifications and another with a tiny home. Burns established the nonprofit 18 years ago to support disabled veterans. Despite the heat, Burns says his sacrifice is minor compared to what troops endure overseas. Local businesses are also contributing through raffles. People can donate funds or volunteer time to support the cause.
