Additional laws address marijuana regulations, squatted vehicle bans, electronic search warrants, increased death benefits for first responders, new state symbols, and allowing hunters to wear pink safety gear. Future legislative topics may include Medicaid expansion, tax cuts, and legalizing mobile sports betting.

Mississippi College president weighs in on incoming bicentennial, decision to change school’s name
SUMMARY: As part of its 200th anniversary in 2026, Mississippi College will change its name to Mississippi Christian University to align with its Christian mission and educational offerings. The college, founded in 1826, will celebrate its legacy while launching initiatives like the Leland Speed Scholarship, enhancing accessibility for students. A $10 million renovation for the law school in Jackson aims to strengthen legal education. Additionally, the university will discontinue its football program, focusing resources on areas of excellence for future growth.

SUMMARY: Bricen Rivers has pleaded not guilty to capital murder, vehicle theft, and tampering with evidence related to the death of his ex-girlfriend, Lauren Johansen, whose body was found in a car trunk in Mississippi. Rivers fled the scene before his capture during a manhunt. The murder is believed to have occurred in Forrest County, and the case was transferred there. Rivers had previously been imprisoned for beating and kidnapping Johansen but was out on bond due to an administrative mistake. Johansen’s father, Lance, is advocating for “Lauren’s Law” to prevent bond eligibility for violent offenders. Rivers’ trial is set for June 25, 2025.
