New law will scrutinize Georgia’s spending | Georgia
SUMMARY: Georgia’s new Tax Expenditures Transparency Act of 2024 mandates lawmakers to analyze 12 state tax expenditures annually, focusing on those expiring in two years or exceeding $20 million. If there are fewer than 12 qualifying expenditures, lawmakers can choose others for assessment. Results will be published on the Department of Audits and Accounts website, allowing public feedback. The House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee will meet annually by January 31 to review the previous year’s analyses. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones emphasized the need for transparency in taxpayer spending and accountability in tax break allocations.
