Science of the Surge: USF team studies wave heights and reopening of Midnight Pass
SUMMARY: Storm surge poses significant challenges to coastal communities, especially highlighted by Hurricane Milton’s damage, which opened the Midnight Pass after over a century. Scientists at the University of South Florida (USF) are studying the impact of such storms, focusing on barrier islands as vital defenses. Research aims to enhance understanding and resilience against natural forces rather than fighting them. Teams are measuring sea level changes, examining debris, and documenting wildlife in the newly formed pass, which has revitalized local ecosystems. The findings will guide better urban planning to coexist with nature and mitigate future storm risks.
