New deck of cards could be key in solving murders, disappearances
SUMMARY: Coast Crim Stoppers in Mississippi is using a deck of playing cards distributed in jails and prisons to help solve cold case homicides and missing persons cases. The cards feature the faces and descriptions of victims, with families and law enforcement hoping to finally get closure after years of waiting. The project cost around $7,000, with 2,500 decks being distributed in local jails. Inmates can anonymously report any information or tips to authorities and may receive up to $2,500 in reward money. Families express gratitude and hope that justice will finally be served for their loved ones.

A game of poker in jail could be the key to solving a Coast cold case. The cards feature dozens of homicides and missing person cases across South Mississippi.

NEW DETAILS: Accused Biloxi cop murderer not competent to stand trial
SUMMARY: Darien Atkinson, charged with the capital murder of Biloxi police officer Robert McKian, has been deemed not competent to stand trial. A judge’s ruling stems from evaluations indicating Atkinson’s mental health has worsened over the past two years, with psychosis and symptoms consistent with schizophrenia. He has been at a state mental hospital since March 2023, showing resistance to assessments and making bizarre claims about a supposed “Matrix” program. Despite disappointment from McKian’s loved ones, officials remain hopeful that charges will not be dismissed if Atkinson’s mental state improves, allowing for a future trial.

Atkinson will continue to be held in a maximum security building at the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield.
