New bridge built in Polk County after old bridge washed out by Helene
SUMMARY: Despite significant devastation, progress is being made to rebuild and reach those stranded by damaged roads in Polk County. Monica Casey reported from Tryon, noting slight improvements but highlighting ongoing challenges. Major road 176 is partially closed, and drone footage revealed extensive damage, including a washed-out bridge now nearing completion. Access to some areas remains difficult due to downed trees and power poles. Duke Energy is working to restore power, with Buncombe County seeing steady numbers, while Henderson County managed to regain power for about 4,000 customers overnight. In Polk County, however, nearly all of Duke Energy’s 8,600 customers are still without power.
In western North Carolina, some progress is being made to rebuild and to reach people who’ve been cut off for days because of damaged roads.

Robinson trails Stein by 17 in another poll | North Carolina
SUMMARY: New polling indicates that the North Carolina gubernatorial race may be decisively leaning toward Attorney General Josh Stein, who currently leads Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson 51%-34%. This shift follows a damaging CNN report about Robinson. Stein, having won the Democratic primary, has gained momentum, showcasing a 17-point lead according to the latest High Point University survey. Robinson’s recent controversies have affected his campaign, which previously showed him ahead in polls earlier this year. The survey also indicates a deadlock in the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, amid widespread discontent with the current administration.
