SUMMARY: Following Tuesday’s primary election runoffs, Fabian Nelson has become the Democratic candidate for House District 66 in Mississippi. With no Republican seeking the seat, Nelson is set to become the state’s first openly gay lawmaker. He received support from Annise Parker, the president and CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund. Nelson plans to use his position to promote Medicaid expansion and address the state’s hospital crisis. Mississippi will become the second-to-last state to elect an openly LGBTQ+ lawmaker, with Louisiana being the only state that has never elected one.
