Nearly 50% of all Georgia voters have already cast their ballots | Georgia
SUMMARY: With Election Day approaching, Georgia is witnessing unprecedented voting activity. Nearly 44% of registered voters (3.1 million) have already cast their ballots, primarily through early voting, with almost 3 million in-person early votes. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger noted daily record-breaking turnout. Although 340,000 absentee ballots were requested, only 200,000 have been returned. Georgia’s 7.2 million voters are crucial in this battleground state, which has no major state offices or Senate seats on the ballot. Enthusiasm for early voting is notable, especially among women and younger voters. As of now, Trump leads in polls, keeping Georgia a toss-up.

Savannah city leaders to reject state’s property tax proposal
SUMMARY: Savannah, GA, is rejecting the state’s homestead exemption proposal, known as House Bill 581, favoring the existing Stephens-Day model. Local homeowners argue that the current system, which locks in tax assessments, is more beneficial than the state proposal that would tie them to 2024 assessments. Savannah realtor Sean Williams stated that staying with the existing model keeps both city and county taxes lower. City leaders, including Mayor Van Johnson, are hosting a public forum on January 28 to discuss concerns and gather homeowner feedback. While opinions vary, there is a collective inclination to reject the state’s model.

SUMMARY: Georgia State Rep. Mack Jackson questioned Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper about the rising egg prices, which have surpassed $6 per dozen due to avian flu affecting local producers. Harper noted that 36 states have been impacted, resulting in the culling of 140 million birds, many of which were egg layers. He requested $370,000 for equipment to respond to avian flu and other emergencies. Additionally, the state agriculture sector has suffered $5.58 billion from Hurricane Helene. Harper sought $37.4 million for renovations at Atlanta’s farmers market and other funds for hemp product regulations and vehicle replacements.
