NC election officials grapple with Helene's impact
SUMMARY: As North Carolina prepares for upcoming elections, concerns arise due to Hurricane Helen’s impact on voting. While no voting machines or ballots are reported damaged, over 37,000 absentee ballots may have been lost. Early in-person voting could face delays in some counties, but officials aim to start as planned on October 17. Past storms like Hurricane Matthew showed that elections can proceed even under challenging conditions. The state has measures in place to track mail-in ballots and assist voters affected by the disaster, allowing them to receive ballots at temporary addresses and making allowances under voter ID laws.
North Carolina elections officials say they’re working to ensure voting still happens in areas damaged by flooding and mudslides from last week‘s powerful storm.

Election 2024: Voters to decide on citizen’s only constitutional amendment | North Carolina
SUMMARY: North Carolina voters will decide on the North Carolina Citizenship Requirement Amendment, which aims to restrict voting to U.S. citizens by changing the state constitution’s language. This measure, the only ballot initiative for the upcoming election, reflects ongoing national discussions regarding noncitizen voting. Republicans advocate for the amendment to secure election integrity, while Democrats argue it undermines voting rights and is unnecessary, citing existing federal laws against noncitizen voting. A simple majority is needed for the amendment’s passage, with significant partisan division over its implications.
