NBC 10 News Today: Woman in court for the death of Kansas City reporter
SUMMARY: The multi-billion-dollar metadata center in Richland Parish will be powered by three gas plants and over 10,000 acres of solar energy, with plans for carbon sequestration to offset 60% of new gas emissions. Despite concerns about potential rate increases, energy claims indicate that Louisiana’s regulatory structure will prevent such changes. The project requires approval from the Public Service Commission. In a separate case, Denette Cobert, charged in connection to the death of Kansas City reporter Adon Mao, was denied bond due to being deemed a flight risk. Cobert faces severe charges, with a previous record for theft through drugging.

Impact day for more fog and looking ahead to Mardi Gras
SUMMARY: A dense fog advisory will be in effect from midnight until 10 AM, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less. Temperatures will be in the 40s to 60s, with a chilly start and plenty of sun expected after the fog clears. Highs will reach the mid-70s. Thursday may see a weak front with some cloud cover and a slight chance of rain. Mardi Gras festivities will likely experience isolated storms, with chances increasing into the evening. Temperatures will remain comfortable, but a breeze may pick up later in the week, with cooler temperatures by Friday.

Meteorologist Devon Lucie starts with the forecast for the postponed parades from Sunday then jumps right into the high resolution forecast showing where dense fog is likeliest Wednesday morning and how much warmer we’ll be by the afternoon while tracking our next cold front showing when it arrives and what it brings in the way of showers and possible thunderstorms and how much cooler we’ll get after it’s through. He then jumps right into the Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras forecast showing when and where rain is likeliest right now and where temperatures will be through all of Carnival weekend.

Tulane University faces potential NIH funding cuts as federal budget plans loom
SUMMARY: Concerns are growing among academic and scientific communities over potential cuts to federal research budgets, particularly affecting Tulane University’s School of Medicine. Research in critical areas, including infectious disease, heart disease, and cancer may be jeopardized. Proposed cuts by the Trump administration could reduce NIH funding for indirect research costs from 53% to 15%, significantly impacting Tulane’s research capabilities, which rely heavily on NIH funding. LSU President William Tate echoed similar concerns, stressing that without adequate support, life-saving discoveries may stall, affecting jobs, the economy, and the hope of patients relying on medical advancements.

According to United for Medical Research, Tulane University is the top NIH-funded institution in Louisiana.

Medical professionals warn of growing measles outbreak during Carnival season
SUMMARY: As Carnival season in New Orleans attracts thousands, medical professionals express concern over a measles outbreak primarily in Texas and New Mexico. Dr. Markalain Dery highlights 124 reported cases in Texas, mainly in unvaccinated children, with fears that this could escalate, recalling a past COVID-19 incident that caused widespread transmission. Louisiana’s MMR vaccination rate is 92.7%, below the 95% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. Dery advises unvaccinated individuals to avoid crowds and suggests checking antibody levels for those vaccinated. Symptoms may appear 7 to 14 days post-infection, and anyone showing signs should seek medical attention and isolate.
