NBC 10 News Today: President Biden announces ceasefire
SUMMARY: President Joe Biden announced a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, effective Wednesday morning, aiming to halt the deadly conflict that has sparked tensions across the Lebanese-Israeli border. The U.S.-led agreement is intended to create safe conditions for people to return home in Northern Israel and Southern Lebanon. As fighting continued, an international committee will monitor compliance. Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister warned of immediate action if Hezbollah breaches the deal. While the ceasefire won’t directly affect the conflict with Hamas in Gaza, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed hope for its broader implications.

New Orleans council talks safety inconsistencies post New Year’s Day terror attack
SUMMARY: The New Orleans City Council is investigating safety measures following a recent terrorist attack on Bourbon Street, aiming to prevent future incidents. Concerns arose over the absence of barricades and the lack of an emergency activation center, as Homeland Security’s director was not present at the meeting. Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick plans to seek guidance from former New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton but faces pushback from council members regarding inclusivity in discussions. Frustration among residents highlighted past attacks, urging the council to ensure transparency and accountability moving forward. An investigation on bollards is set to begin.

Cold weather fire prevention precautions
SUMMARY: As cold weather brings increased fire hazards, West Monroe’s Fire Prevention Chief Charles Huggins shares safety tips. Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from combustibles and plug electric heaters directly into wall outlets. Avoid using cooking appliances for heating, as they lack proper safety features. Ensure all rooms have accessible exits and maintain working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If alarms are over 10 years old, replace them. Local fire departments offer assistance with installation. Stay prepared to protect your loved ones from the dangers of winter fires.
