SUMMARY: The National Guard and Air National Guard play diverse roles beyond operating large C-17 aircraft. Recently, members demonstrated their capabilities, including Chinook helicopters and the quick CASE 47 helicopters, at Camp Shelby, the largest state military training facility. Soldiers train with advanced technology, using simulation equipment for M-4s and tank operations. However, there is currently a nationwide recruitment challenge, with about 8,000 Army and 2,500 Air National Guardsmen. Adjutant General Bobby Guinn emphasized the need for incentives, such as reduced car tags and state tax reductions, to bolster enlistment. Over 300 troops are currently deployed, including in Africa.
