NAACP: Deputies show up to listening session
SUMMARY: At a recent listening session hosted by the Rankin County NAACP at Mount Carmel Ministries, individuals were encouraged to share their experiences with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department. However, the presence of unannounced attorneys from the sheriff’s department created an intimidating environment, preventing speakers from sharing their stories. Angela English, president of the NAACP, noted that this intimidation led them to reconsider their approach. This event follows the fallout from the “Goon Squad” case where five former deputies were implicated in the torture of two Black men. Community members are urged to document and share their experiences.
In what was supposed to be a listening session between the Department of Justice and potential victims of unfair treatment from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department took a different turn.

City, county leaders apply for grants to replace Glendale Ave bridges
SUMMARY: Hattiesburg and the Forest County Board of Supervisors are collaborating to replace two deteriorating bridges on Glendale Avenue, one in Forest County and another within Hattiesburg city limits. These bridges, which span a river and railroad tracks, face projected poor conditions by 2026. To fund the estimated $5.4 million project, city and county leaders aim to apply for a federal grant through the Bridge Investment Program, which allocates over $2 billion for bridge repairs nationwide in fiscal year 2025. Securing this funding is vital due to escalating costs and the increasing urgency of maintaining infrastructure.
Hattiesburg and Forrest County applied to receive funding for the bridge replacement to take place.
