Multiple meteor showers to light up Mississippi night sky in coming weeks
SUMMARY: This week, two meteor showers—the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids—will peak simultaneously, offering an exciting opportunity to see up to 25 meteors per hour. The Delta Aquariids will peak early on July 30, while the Alpha Capricornids are expected to produce about five meteors per hour. Clear skies in Mississippi will provide ideal viewing conditions, especially away from city lights and during the moon’s waning phase. NASA recommends midnight to dawn as the best times for viewing. The next major meteor shower will be the Perseids, peaking in mid-August.

Mississippi recorded $21.5 million drop in Q3 gaming revenue
SUMMARY: Mississippi casinos experienced a revenue decline in the third quarter of 2024, contrasting with the overall growth of the U.S. gaming industry, which reported an 8.1% increase. Mississippi’s gaming revenue fell by 3.5% to $605.8 million, following a 2.3% decrease in the second quarter. This marks two consecutive quarters of downturns after a strong start to the year. Despite legal sports betting in the state, revenue could improve with the legalization of mobile sports betting, which was proposed but failed to pass this year. Lawmakers aim to revisit this issue in the 2025 session.

SUMMARY: During a Long Beach Board of Aldermen meeting, a unanimous decision was made to restate a lease agreement for a casino development in an area without casinos along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This follows earlier lease negotiations with Long Beach Harbor Resorts for land where an old Kmart was located. Mayor George Bass noted amendments are needed before the final ratification at the next meeting, with plans for a 40-year lease allowing extensions. The city anticipates $500,000 in annual gaming revenue during the initial years. Construction must begin within three years, with gaming operations launched within five years.
