Georgetown, SC celebrates local Olympian Melissa Jefferson with parade
SUMMARY: Georgetown County held a parade to honor Olympic gold medalist Melissa Jefferson, a native of Hemingway, who won a gold medal in the women’s 4×100 meter relay and a bronze in the 100 meter at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Thousands gathered on Front Street, including representatives from about 70 organizations, such as her alma mater, Coastal Carolina University. Jefferson expressed gratitude for the community’s support, crediting them for her success. Her seventh-grade teacher shared pride in Jefferson’s growth from a young girl to a humble Olympian. The parade drew significant attendance, rivaling the county’s popular Christmas event.
