MSU’s Jurrangelo Cijntje taken 15th overall by Mariners in 2024 MLB Draft
SUMMARY: Mississippi State ambidextrous pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje was picked 15th overall by the Seattle Mariners in the MLB Draft. The Curacao native is a natural left-hander who learned to throw right-handed at 6 to imitate his father. His fastball tops 90 mph from both hands, and reaches nearly 100 mph right-handed. In two seasons at Starkville, he primarily pitched right-handed in his sophomore year, posting a 3.67 ERA and an 8-2 record as a starter in 2024, including a career-high 11 strikeouts in a win over Vanderbilt in April.

MSU hosts ceremony after new renovations on Sanderson Center
SUMMARY: Mississippi State University recently celebrated the completion of a $2.5 million renovation of the Joe Frank Sanderson Center, enhancing its fitness facilities. The upgrades include modern fitness equipment, an open-concept space replacing former racquetball courts, an interactive climbing wall, and improved flooring. The renovated center now boasts approximately 19,000 to 20,000 square feet of fitness space, nearly doubling the original area. In 2022, students approved a fee increase to fund these enhancements, which aim to provide more opportunities for health and fitness within the student community. This is the first significant renovation since the center opened in 1998.

Pearl police officer, driver injured during crash on I-20

Canton man convicted in shooting death of wife
SUMMARY: Myles Flint Johnson, a 53-year-old from Canton, was convicted of second-degree murder for the shooting death of his wife, Kristi Johnson, after a three-day trial in Madison County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole. On January 30, 2024, Johnson called 911 claiming his wife had shot herself, but investigators found she had been shot in the back two days prior. Evidence revealed ongoing domestic violence in their relationship. Johnson testified it was accidental, but the jury deliberated for three hours before reaching their verdict.
