MSU climatologist talks about upcoming hurricane season

SUMMARY: NOAA is forecasting an above-average hurricane season this year, with 17 to 25 named tropical cyclones, of which four to seven could be Category 3 or higher hurricanes. State climatologist and WTVA chief meteorologist emphasize the significance of these forecasts and stress vigilance, especially when storms enter the Gulf. The Mississippi State climatologist highlighted concerns about 12 million dead or dying pine trees as a result of last year’s drought, which could exacerbate damage during hurricanes. Residents are advised to stay prepared and heed local warnings, particularly if they have properties along the coast. The peak hurricane season is from late August through September.
