Clarksdale drops lawsuit over newspaper editorial that judge ordered removed
SUMMARY: The city of Clarksdale, Mississippi, dropped its libel lawsuit against The Clarksdale Press Register on Monday, following controversy over a judge’s order to remove a critical editorial. The piece, which addressed the city’s lack of notification regarding a meeting on a proposed tax, ignited backlash from First Amendment advocates. Clarksdale Mayor Chuck Espy attributed the decision to an offer from the newspaper’s owner to issue a clarification. However, the owner stated this offer was made prior to the lawsuit and was no longer valid. The case drew national attention and support for press rights from various media organizations.

Mississippi Senate advances tax reform bill, setting up future negotiations with House
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Senate has advanced legislation to reduce the state’s income tax to 2.99% by 2030 and lower the grocery tax from 7% to 5% by July 2025, aiming to provide financial relief amid bipartisan support. However, the plan includes a gas tax increase of 9 cents, funding infrastructure projects. While the Senate’s bill reduces taxes, concerns were raised about its impact on the state’s retirement system, which is only 56% funded. Opponents argued it could create future financial problems. Both the Senate and House have proposed tax reforms, which will be reconciled in conference committees.
