Training over tech: School safety expert weighs in on security measures
SUMMARY: School districts across the U.S. are investing in advanced safety technologies like weapons detection systems and panic buttons, but experts highlight the importance of foundational safety measures first. Kevin Wren, a safety advocate, categorizes security products into three types: gun-related, AI/cloud, and communication tools. He argues that without effective communication systems and proper training for staff, these technologies may be ineffective. Despite the Tennessee General Assembly approving $230 million for school safety, Wren warns about a lack of guidelines leading to potentially unhelpful purchases. Ultimately, he emphasizes prioritizing basic security measures, like locked doors, which have proven effective.

Sevierville nonprofit helps provide displaced families with shelter for holidays
SUMMARY: A nonprofit in Sevierville, Mountain Strong Sanctuary, is assisting families displaced by Hurricane Helen by providing them with shelter for the holidays. Reporter Emily Crabtree highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to distribute campers to those in need across East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. They recently acquired five additional campers and are working with various partners to deliver them. The initiative aims to provide temporary housing until families secure more permanent solutions.
