Mother, acquaintance charged in brutal death of one-year-old
SUMMARY: A one-year-old child was found severely beaten and unresponsive at Sunset Apartments in Jackson, marking the 108th homicide in the city this year. The child's mother and her acquaintance are charged with felony child abuse, but the charges may be upgraded to capital murder pending further investigation. The whereabouts of the acquaintance are unknown, and federal authorities are assisting in his apprehension. Four other children at the residence are now in the custody of Child Protection Services. The police chief, deeply affected by the incident, noted that the abuse likely did not start on the day of the child's death.
