They discussed common misconceptions about tortoise shells being separate from their bodies, clarifying that the shell is part of the tortoise. SUMMARY: The newly built M Avenue overpass has reopened, ending a 16-month detour for local commuters like Jennifer Northrup. While some residents celebrate the convenience, concerns arise about increased traffic and changes to the area’s small-town vibe, particularly with the anticipated opening of Bies, an anchor business. Matt and Annette McBride are excited as the bridge brings them closer to Bies, which they hope will attract more visitors. To support this development, Harrison County issued a $15 million bond and a $5 million TIF agreement for area improvements. Bies is now expected to open in late spring or early summer instead of December.

The Menge Avenue overpass reopened Monday afternoon after being closed for 16 months.

SUMMARY: The Bonnie Cary Spillway openings have severely impacted marine life in the Mississippi Sound, according to Dr. Mobi Salangi from the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. Following the 2019 spillway opening, 153 dead dolphins were reported, indicating a collapsed ecosystem. The Mississippi River introduces waste from 31 states, creating dead zones in the Gulf that affect various species. The local economy has also suffered, with a complete loss of oysters and significant declines in crab and shrimp populations. The recovery from such events takes years, compounded by outdated management tactics. A lecture on these impacts will be held at USM.
