'Cold-blooded murder:' New filed court documents released for Marion man charged in OIS
SUMMARY: Federal court documents reveal details of a 48-hour crime spree by 34-year-old Jeremy Alexander Smith, who faces 17 charges, including the murders of two public servants: Florence County paramedic Phenicia Machado and a New Mexico State Police officer. Described as a “cold-blooded murderer,” Smith’s criminal history began at age 16. Reports indicate he kidnapped, carjacked, and shot Machado before traveling to New Mexico and killing the officer. A sentencing memorandum advocates for Smith’s life sentence, citing the “incalculable suffering” he has caused. Smith awaits trial for Machado’s murder while his sentencing for the officer’s murder is set next month.

Newly filed court documents have been released in the case of a Marion man who killed a New Mexico state police officer and is charged in the murder of a Florence County paramedic.
Jaremy Alexander Smith, 34, pled guilty in January to the murder of New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare along Interstate 40 in mid-March while driving the vehicle of Florence County Paramedic 52-year-old Phonesia Machado-Fore.

Future of Greater Greenville Sanitation
SUMMARY: Greater Greenville Sanitation is facing uncertainty with two state bills that could impact its operations. Residents expressed concerns at a recent meeting, fearing potential loss of service. Representative Mike Burns introduced the bills following unsuccessful negotiations with GHS, aiming to address perceived unfair competition with private companies. Bill 4003 seeks a compromise, limiting GHS service area, while Bill 4002 could dismantle GHS entirely. Some residents worry about losing garbage services, with GHS claiming legislators may prioritize special interests over constituents. Burns reassured that the intent is not to shut down GHS but to find a workable solution for all parties involved.
